On Friday, March 5, 2021, CWIP hosted a sold-out virtual event with three women at the forefront of career and leadership development in Chicago nonprofits. Hosted by Carolyn Nopar, Communications Committee Chair and past CWIP Board Co-Chair and the CWIP Membership Committee, the panel included Marian DeBerry, Senior Counsel Executive Search at Campbell & Company, Marissa (Martin) Delgado, Managing Director of Koya Partners, and Kara Kennedy, Executive Director of Lumity (NPO.net). This group of women offered their advice and reflections on the challenges facing women in leadership and tips for applicants navigating recruitment in the nonprofit sector.
The expert panel shared lots of insights and stories about their own paths. Here are just some of the great tips the panel offered to members:
- A Social Media Presence is a MUST (LinkedIn, alumni associations, boards); find mentors!
- Be aware of what’s out there on your social media.
- Regardless of how long you’ve been in a job, recruiters want to hear how you grew within your role—it’s all about sharing your story and showing results.
- Be bold and advocate for yourself!
- Don’t diminish yourself—understand that you have power and value.
- Tap into the resources that recruiters provide! Post your resume, refine your job filters, and reach out to introduce yourself to recruiters (but remember to be patient).
- Be focused, but also be open to possibilities.
If you want to hear more from the panelists, here is a link to the event recording. Please watch and share with others in your network, and consider registering for our April Friday Share "Raising Expectations of Yourself as a Leader" on April 9th.
Also, shout out to our members: the CWIP Communication Committee is recruiting new members! Help us to share the story of what CWIP and our members are doing. Maybe you can even get to post fun write-ups like this one! Those interested in learning more about joining the committee should reach out via info@cwiponline.org.
